Dunedin

So we are now in Dunedin in the South Island of New Zealand.  It is so cold 🥶. Time for coats and trousers -what a change from Australia.

Dunedin is a strange place. We are told that Dunedin is the Gaelic name for Edinburgh and the city has been designed to be similar -with a Princes St and a grid of roads that mirror those in Edinburgh.  Today we saw a castle and a brewery.  It was just like being in Scotland with a piper, highland dancer and the haggis being piped in for lunch - very surreal considering we are 12,000 miles away!  This is Lanarch Castle (plus a lot of tourists!).

Some beautiful gardens complete with a strange Alice in Wonderland theme.








A visit to Speights brewery was very much appreciated by all - particularly the tasting at the end!




 
Off to Christchurch tomorrow.

Bay of Islands

A stop at the Bay of Islands in North Island - as the name suggests a collection of beautiful little islands.  This is where the treaty between the British and Mauri’s was signed in 1840 which, naturally, is now a tourist attraction. The boat on the right is the longest war canoe in the world at 35m. And this marks the spot where the treaty was signed. We then had to watch the cultural show and have our picture taken with some of the cast (we are the ones in the middle by the way!)     Then off to explore the islands - lots of beautiful waterfalls    H plus the oldest shop in New Zealand - called the Stone House. Finally, we found a chocolate factory and shop - what a good way to end the day 😊 Next stop Rotorua - mud pools and sulphur - lovely!!

The Blue Mountains

A trip up the Blue Mountains today. A thunderstorm last night has thankfully brought down the temperature a little (I realise that, reading this in the UK, you’d probably think I am very ungrateful for hot temperatures but this is definitely too much for me!). When we first arrived we thought the mist was really thick and we thought we would see nothing as you can see from the pic. However, the mist lifted through the day and we finally got some views. This is called the three sisters. This is supposed to be the steepest funicular railway in the world. Difficult to capture exactly how steep but all those seats that look laid back at the station are bolt upright as you go down! No idea why a photo with a stuffed parrot was necessary!! But a nice afternoon in an interesting park - even a bit of exercise up some steep steps - thank goodness for those gym sessions. Watch the blog tomorrow for the views from the top of Sydney Bridge.

Auckland and Hobbiton

So our ship arrived in its final port of Auckland where we spent a couple of days.  Here it is waiting to take another load of hungry cruisers to Perth on its next journey (Celebrity Solstice on the left). First stop in Auckland was the Auckland zoo where I was determined to see kiwis before we left New Zealand. This was no easy task as they are nocturnal creatures and we had already failed in this quest in Rotorua where we had sat in the dark for ages in a kiwi enclosure to no avail. However, today we were lucky and finally found a couple in this zoo (very hard to photograph in a nocturnal enclosure!). In the evening we went up the Auckland tower with wonderful views and had dinner in the revolving restausrant.  A long way from home here and a long way down from the top (328m). They do bungee jumping from the top of the tower -definitely not for me!         On our 2nd day we did a long drive to Hobbiton- the film set for Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit. A...
